INTRODUCING .... OPUA'S STATE OF THE ART FLOATING TOILET....

OPUA'S FLOATING LOO IS LAUNCHED

Opua has seen a few launchings over the years but the arrival of a floating public toilet, which is now in place at the quarantine wharf, was well and truly in a class of its own.

The Far North Holdings' initiative is designed to encourage responsible boating practices and further reduce the risk of contamination in the sheltered boat haven.

The water-based effluent disposal system provides a free comfort stop for incoming vessels waiting to complete Customs and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries clearance when entering New Zealand, but will also be available to the general boating community at 'high-intensity' events and activities at other locations.

The facility was built in collaboration with the Far North District Council, the Northland Regional Council and the Opua Marina Liaison Committee, with support of Customs and MAF. The launching was timed to beat the start of the new cruising season, when more than 400 vessels are expected to clear Customs at Opua.

Far North Holdings Ltd chairman at that time, Malcolm Nicolson, said "regular water sampling had shown on-going improvements in water quality and the company was determined to play its part in achieving even better results."

"Opua" he said, "was a 'no discharge' port but many incoming vessels did not have holding tanks. No shore facilities were available either for those aboard vessels berthed in the quarantine area and crews could be left waiting 12 hours or more for clearance.

"While the facility would also be available for public use, it could only be accessed by boat."

The toilet uses solar energy to power its electrical system and collects its own rain water. It will be maintained and operated by FNHL, with the holding tank to be emptied at the company's shore pump-out facility for boats.
